The open source Link Whisper alternative

Link Whisper earned its position: it made internal linking visible to a generation of WordPress site owners, and if your entire workflow lives inside the WordPress editor and you want suggestions while drafting, it remains a reasonable pick. The reporting screens are genuinely useful for getting a first picture of your link distribution.

The structural differences with Linkagent are the interesting part. Link Whisper works at the moment of writing, one post at a time, with suggestions driven substantially by keyword overlap; you accept links and the plugin writes them into your post content. Linkagent works at the level of your whole site on a schedule: it crawls everything, builds a topic model, scores every candidate pair, and injects approved links at render time without ever touching stored content. That means it also covers the posts you wrote five years ago, keeps working when you switch themes or even CMSs, and can be removed cleanly at any moment.

The other differences are philosophical. Linkagent is open source (AGPL) and self-hostable; Link Whisper is a closed commercial plugin with a yearly license. Linkagent refuses to invent anchor text (every anchor is a phrase you already wrote), while keyword-driven suggestions tend toward repeating the same exact-match anchors. If you run anything other than WordPress, the comparison is over before it starts: Linkagent works on any stack; Link Whisper doesn't try to.
