SEO Silos: Structure Without the Straitjacket

SEO siloing is the practice of grouping a site's pages into topic-based sections and concentrating internal links within each group, so that every silo builds dense, unambiguous topical relevance. The core insight (pages about the same topic should link to each other more than to unrelated pages) remains sound. The classic implementation (rigid rules forbidding links between silos) is outdated, hurts users, and discards some of your best linking opportunities. Modern practice keeps the concentration and drops the prohibition.

The classic theory

Siloing entered SEO vocabulary in the mid-2000s (Bruce Clay's writing popularized the term). The reasoning ran like this:

Search engines assess what a page (and a site section) is about partly through its links. If your "espresso machines" pages link tightly to each other and receive anchors about espresso machines, the whole group reinforces itself: a dense subgraph with consistent topical signals. Link equity arriving anywhere in the silo circulates within it instead of leaking to unrelated sections, and the silo's head page accumulates the concentrated authority of everything beneath it.

Classic implementations enforced this two ways:

  • Physical silos: URL directories mirroring the topic groups: /espresso-machines/ contains all espresso machine pages, /grinders/ all grinder pages.
  • Virtual silos: the linking rules themselves; pages link up to their silo's head page, down to children, and sideways to siblings within the silo. Links across silos were forbidden, or grudgingly permitted only between silo heads.

The strict version produced real results in its era, and the discipline it imposed (know what each page is about, know which group it belongs to, link accordingly) is permanently valuable.

Why strict silos are outdated

Four things changed, or were never true.

1. Relevance beats territory. The prohibition on cross-silo links assumes a link to another topic "leaks theme." But a link from your "burr grinder guide" to your "espresso tamping" page (different silos in a classic taxonomy) is exactly the kind of contextual, editorially-justified link search engines are built to reward. Topical relevance lives at the level of the two pages being linked and the sentence containing the link, not at the level of directory membership. Refusing a genuinely relevant link to preserve a diagram optimizes the diagram, not the site.

2. It's not how healthy sites link. Wikipedia (the most internally-linked, best-ranking reference site in existence) cross-links between "silos" in nearly every paragraph. Natural expertise is connective: someone who deeply knows espresso will reference grinders, water chemistry, and dairy science. A site that never crosses topics reads as either thin or artificially constrained.

3. Users don't navigate in silos. A reader comparing espresso machines needs the grinder guide; strict siloing forces them back through the homepage or a search box. Every such dead end costs engagement.

4. The equity-hoarding math was always shaky. Silo theory's "keep the juice in the theme" borrows the same hoarding intuition behind PageRank sculpting, and like sculpting, it fails on mechanics: internal links don't leak value out of the site, they route it within the site. Cross-silo links from strong pages to needy pages are often the single best equity moves available, as the routing math in how link equity flows makes clear.

What siloing got right and wrong

Right: dense intra-topic linking builds clear topical signals, and every page should belong to a deliberate group. Wrong: that links between groups damage those signals. Concentration is a feature; prohibition was superstition.

Soft silos: the modern version

What survived is variously called soft siloing, topic clusters, or hub-and-spoke: different vocabularies for the same architecture:

  • A hub (pillar) page per topic covers the subject broadly and targets its head term.
  • Cluster pages (spokes) each cover one subtopic in depth and target long-tail terms.
  • Dense intra-cluster linking: spokes link to the hub and to relevant sibling spokes; the hub links to every spoke. So far, identical to a classic silo.
  • Free cross-cluster linking wherever context justifies it: when a spoke in the espresso cluster genuinely needs to cite a page in the grinder cluster, it does, in prose, with a descriptive anchor.

The default is still intra-cluster (most of a page's natural references are its topical siblings; no rule required), so the dense-subgraph benefit survives intact. The cross-links added on top don't dilute the cluster; they connect clusters into a site. Structurally this is the hub-and-spoke model with bridges, compared against pyramids and meshes in internal link structure models.

The practical litmus test for any cross-link: does the source sentence already discuss the target's topic? If yes, link it; silo membership is irrelevant. If you'd have to write an awkward sentence to justify the link, skip it; and that's true within a silo too. Sentence-level relevance is the rule that replaces every territorial rule, and it's mechanically checkable: LinkAgent scores candidate links on the topical similarity of the two pages (TF-IDF vectors, clustered by topic) and only proposes anchors that already exist verbatim in the source sentence. A cross-cluster link that passes both tests is a good link by construction; one that fails them wouldn't have been saved by silo membership.

When silo discipline still earns its keep

Strictness isn't always wrong; it's wrong as a default. Situations where harder boundaries genuinely help:

  • Huge directory-style sites. A job board, real-estate portal, or business directory with 500,000 near-uniform pages can't rely on editorial judgment per link; there's no editor and no prose. Template-driven silo rules (city → neighborhood → listing, tight lateral links within a metro) are how such sites stay crawlable and thematically legible at all. Cross-links still exist, but as designed exceptions ("nearby metros"), not free choices.
  • Genuinely unrelated business lines. If one domain sells industrial valves and wedding photography, linking between the halves helps no one; near-total separation is honest.
  • Crawl-budget triage. On very large sites, silo boundaries give crawlers predictable, shallow paths within each section and keep equity from scattering across a million thin pages.
  • Editorial governance at scale. With fifty writers, "link within your cluster by default; cross-cluster links need a sentence that earns them" is an enforceable rule that prevents the every-post-links-to-everything mush.

Notice what's shared: silo strictness pays where editorial judgment can't scale. The smaller and more editorial the site, the softer the silo should be.

Building a soft silo in practice

  1. Cluster your existing content by topic. Not by your nav's opinion; by actual content. Group pages that share vocabulary and intent; TF-IDF similarity does this mechanically, or card-sort a spreadsheet if the site is small.
  2. Name a hub per cluster. Usually an existing strong page upgraded to genuinely cover the topic broadly; write one where none exists. Thin category listings don't count.
  3. Wire the interior: hub → every spoke; every spoke → hub; siblings ↔ where prose supports it.
  4. Add the bridges: wherever a sentence in one cluster discusses another cluster's page, link it, including bridges from content clusters to commercial pages, which is where the strategy pays rent.
  5. Don't force URL migrations. Physical silos (matching directories) are optional cosmetics; the linking is the silo. Changing URLs adds redirect risk for near-zero gain, as covered in site structure for SEO.
  6. Maintain at publish: every new page gets a cluster, links from its hub and 2–3 siblings, and its own outbound references on day one.

Steps 1, 3, 4 and 6 are graph work over hundreds of page pairs, which is why they're the steps that silently don't happen on busy teams. Any structural rule for your site should survive one question: would following it ever force you to omit a link a good editor would add? Strict siloing fails that test constantly; soft siloing passes it by design. Keep the clusters, keep the density, keep the discipline of knowing what every page is about and where it belongs, and let sentence-level relevance, not territory, decide each link.
